While social media sites are rapidly growing, so are the ways in which we can communicate through them. Various forms of video and audio (vlogs, podcasts and other streaming multimedia) are being used to attract the attention of target publics including the media. Through social media blogs, PR professionals are able to send their press releases as part of full multi-media packages to journalists and bloggers. Richard Edelman, president and CEO of Edelman, said in a blog titled ”MSM Getting On a Stick,”

Reporters expect PR folks to send ready to use digitized content… Pictures matter more than ever.

An entry on pr-squared.com further expands on this thought stating that while it is impossible for PR practitioners to create multimedia kits for every story idea, we will begin to develop a system that combines traditional with multimedia.

A quickie pitch gets a nibble and then the PR pro puts together a multimedia package that facilitates a professional edit-cycle by the reporter.

Another helpful blog, written by Kevin Davis, explains some of the benefits of embracing social media, including: getting your message out faster and to more people, improving branding, and boosting the impact of direct marketing.

Social media vehicles, on the other hand, allow for instantaneous dissemination of not just news, but images, audio, video, and other multimedia content as well. And because releases geared toward social media outlets contain only key highlights, pertinent facts, and hyperlinks to related statistics and quotes, the information they contain can be immediately picked up and posted by bloggers and other online journalists.
